An extended essay in history provides students with an opportunity to undertake in-depth research in an area of history of genuine interest to them. The outcome of the research should be a coherent and structured essay that effectively addresses a particular issue expressed as a research question, or, if this is unsuitable, a hypothesis.
This criterion assesses the extent to which the purpose of the essay is specified. In many subjects, the aim of the essay will normally be expressed as a question and, therefore, this criterion is called the “research question.” However, certain disciplines may permit or encourage different w ays of formulating the research task.
The IA markscheme grades each section separately; the EE markscheme grades each criteria across the essay as a whole. You will select which of your IB subjects will form the basis of your EE in the Spring Term of the first year of IB. This will usually (although not always) be one of your Higher Level subjects.
You will cover the nature of the extended essay, the assessment process, policies, procedures, ways to prepare students for the research process and strategies for reflection in the extended essay. The workshop will not discuss managing the entire process on a school-wide level because that subject is addressed in another workshop, Managing the extended essay.
Assessment of the Extended Essay The EE is an externally assessed component of the Diploma Programme, marked by an IB examiner. Examiners are unaware of any predicted grade that your supervisor gives to your essay. The examiners simply apply the assessment criteria based on the evidence in front of them—your work.
