What is the significance of the extended essay? The extended essay provides: practical preparation for undergraduate research; an opportunity for students to investigate a topic of personal interest to them, which relates to one of the student's six DP subjects, or takes the interdisciplinary approach of a World Studies extended essay.
IB Extended Essay. Extended Essay is a focused study of a topic in a particular discipline. It is a 4000 essay written to deepen the knowledge and developing high order research and writing skills. EE gives student a liberty to select a topic but ensures that it is dealt in-depth with a particular subject or with a perfect combination of subject.

We will be awarding Diplomas and Certificates for the May 2020 session. At a subject level, students will be awarded a grade on the normal IB 1-7 scale. Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay and the Career-Related Programme Reflective Project will be awarded a grade on the normal IB A-E scale.

The extended essay should be written in a clear, correct and formal academic style, appropriate to the subject from which the topic is drawn. Given that the extended essay is a formally written research paper, it should strive to maintain a professional, academic look.

What is an IB Extended Essay. One of the core components of the IB Diploma, Extended Essay gives students the complete freedom to pick any topic of their choice from an IB subject, conduct in-depth research and write a 4,000-word essay on it.
Extended Essay: The aspect of the IB which some students hate and some love. One of the biggest keys to the Extended Essay is choosing which subject you want to write your work in and developing that crucial research question. Annoyingly, coming up with that idea and research question can be the toughest part of the entire process.
All extended essays are externally assessed by examiners appointed by the IB. The total marks available are 34. However, when your supervisor marks your essay in order to arrive at a predicted grade, the grading will be based on the qualitative grade descriptors for the Extended Essay (see below), not a translation of a number score into a letter grade.
